Correctioncorrection preliminary casualty estimates were previously mistakenly described as confirmed

Sudanese rights organization Emergency Lawyers said an airstrike at an artisanal gold mining site near the Sudan-Egypt border on 10 October killed at least 72 workers. It described this death toll as preliminary. Reuters and AFP said they could not independently verify the account.

The Sudan Doctors Network earlier reported at least 13 people killed and 28 wounded. The two groups reported different early casualty totals, and the final toll remains unconfirmed. The accounts concern a difficult-to-access border area, where assessing casualties independently is challenging. These figures should be presented as attributed preliminary estimates rather than a settled official count. Survivors described people fleeing the mining area following the strike.

Emergency Lawyers accused Egyptian military aircraft of carrying out the attack, an allegation not independently verified by Reuters or AFP. Egyptian authorities had not publicly responded in the reporting reviewed. NOW MATTERS previously described the casualty total as confirmed; that wording was incorrect and has been corrected.
