Russia told the WHO no plague cases had been registered in Irkutsk after a laboratory worker died. WHO found no evidence of ongoing transmission, while the cause of death remains undetermined.

What the briefing reports

Russia informed the World Health Organization that no plague case had been registered recently in Irkutsk Oblast following the death of an employee of the Irkutsk Antiplague Research Institute on 2 October 2026. WHO reported on 10 October that the worker died from pneumonia of undetermined cause. The agency said there was no identified evidence of ongoing transmission associated with the event, based on information provided by Russian authorities.

Russian authorities told WHO that contacts were monitored and tested, with no high-threat pathogens detected. WHO cautioned that the diagnosis of the deceased laboratory worker had not been confirmed and that the source of the fatal illness remained unknown. The organization said further investigation was necessary and that a laboratory-associated exposure could not be completely excluded.

Earlier reports described pneumonic plague as a suspected cause of death, and the United States indicated willingness to assist Russia. The earlier NOW MATTERS article incorrectly described a suspected outbreak as having occurred and presented containment measures as a response to a confirmed outbreak. This article has been corrected using the subsequent WHO disease outbreak report, and the original reporting remains linked below.
